Ayam Suwir Rica-Rica (Hot and Spicy Shredded Chicken)

>> Wednesday, July 2, 2008

This is a favorite dish in my family in Indonesia. The original recipe given by my niece who's her mother is Minahasan, but I got the modified one from my sister. I modified also the modification recipe by my sister, so this recipe has been altered two times. I revised it by adding white pepper powder, lemon juice and sambel oelek. My beloved liked it very much thought at the first time he said the dish looked ugly. Now, we called this meal as Ayam Jelek (Ugly Chicken) instead of Ayam Suwir Rica-Rica.

Last weekend before traveling to Paris, I cooked this meal as requested by my hubby. My mom, sister and my 5 year old niece can't eat hot and spicy food, hence I reduced the red chilies. My niece loved it very much, though it was still a bit hot for her. She even couldn't keep her hands of the dish. She kept on coming and took some while watching cartoon. She even said to my best friend on the phone that her auntie made a very delicious food but hot :D

In this recipe, I will write the one that is really hot and spicy. You can reduce the quantity of red chilies if you can't stand eating hot and spicy food, but you can also increase them if you think you are strong. Just be careful not to spend the rest of your day in the toilet after eating this chicken *LOL*

4 chicken thighs
10 red onions (shallot)
2 tomatoes
12 red chilies
12 bird eye chilies
2 tbsp sambel oelek
Salt, pepper and sugar to taste
Lemon juice as needed
1 cuo of water for boiling chicken
Cooking oil for deep frying

1. Boil chicken with a cup of water and a pinch of salt until set. Drain and cook half done. Shred when cold. Set aside.
2. Blend red onion with food processor or blender. Set aside.
3. Blend tomatoes, red chilies and bird eye chilies with food processor. Set aside.
4. Heat 4 tbsp oil from frying chicken in a skillet. Sauté red onion until fragrant.
5. Add tomato mixture, sambel oelek and lemon juice. Cook until the water evaporated. Season with salt, pepper and sugar. Mix well and cook for a while.
6. Fold in shredded chicken. Mix well and cook until set.
7. Serve with warm steamed rice. Yummie *drooling*

This looks good, and I bet it has a wonderful taste! You prefer to use white pepper in here? I like that. Do you remove the seeds from the chiles?
